Trip of the month
Sterbergia – Queen of Israeli Wildflowers.
Without question the Queen of Israeli wildflowers, sternbergias ( helmoniyot in Hebrew) were considered extremely rare until they were discovered in dozens of isolated locations. Although sternbergia sites are only a few dunams in size, each separate spot contains over a hundred flowers clustered together and flowering within a period of several weeks.
Blooms resemble large bells and sport unusually attractive yellow stamens. During their fall appearance they have no leaves and burst full-blown out of the ground. What makes them especially appealing is their appearance in November, when other flowers are few and far between.
Sternbergias have begun to appear in along the Rosh Pina Riverbed. Park at the Old Cemetery and hike for 30 minutes. When you reach a gate, turn right, IMMEDIATELY climb the dirt path up a hill and there they are!!!
